Building Paint Suggestions with a Little Help from AI

If you've browsed our Warhammer range lately, you might've noticed something new: most kits now come with a range of Suggested Paints, broken down by manufacturer and type.

Why? Well, we wanted to try and answer "what paints do I actually need?"

Here's how we put those lists together.

The Problem We Were Solving
Anyone who's stood in front of a paint rack trying to figure out what to buy for a new army knows the feeling. You've got the kit in hand, you've watched a few tutorials, and you still end up guessing.

We currently stock Games workshop and Army Painter Fanatics ranges, and we wanted our suggestions reflect that, so you can choose the brand that suits your budget and preferences.

Doing that manually across so many armies, factions, chapters etc., each covering everything from Space Marines to Skaven to Daughters of Khaine, would've taken our very small team of web developers (one) several weeks.

But... here's where AI comes in.

What the AI Actually Did
We used Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude AI models to cross-reference our current ranges against each army and faction's core colour palette. For every paint at every stage of the painting process, we've tried to match options from manufacturers across colour territory, purpose and types of paint.

Critically, the AI worked only from what we stock. No discontinued paints (unless we still have some stock) and no paints we don't carry. Every suggestion is something you can actually buy from us today straight from the model's page!

We Still Did the Thinking
AI got us the framework. The editorial decisions — which factions to cover, how many paints per stage, which sub-factions deserved their own profiles rather than sharing — those were made by us.

We also review and correct the output before anything goes live, because anyone who's played a Nurgle army knows that "close enough green" just isn't good enough.

The Result
Almost 80 unique paint profiles, most with more than 40 paints to choose from. Whether you're starting a Stormcast Eternal or finishing a Leagues of Votann kill team, the suggested list is there to help take out some of the guesswork!
