The Royal Australian Mint marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong (22–27 April 1951) with this 50c uncirculated coin. Australian soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, made a defensive stand on Hill 504 during one of the toughest engagements of the Korean War.
The reverse, designed by Mint coin designer Bronwyn Scott, features the soldiers in a still, steady formation alongside a delicate lattice inspired by munsal, the decorative wooden frames found on traditional Korean doors and windows. Wattle motifs and 32 red poppies bloom within the pattern, each poppy honouring an Australian soldier lost at Kapyong. The obverse carries the Daniel Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.
Mintage: 40,000 worldwide. Issued as Australian legal tender. Presented in a protective capsule on a card showing imagery from the Australian War Memorial collection.
A meaningful piece for Anzac Day collectors and anyone with an interest in Australia’s military history.
