Metallic blue was one of the two finishes the Icon collection launched with, and it remains the most quietly striking of them. The lacquer is shot through with a fine metallic particle that lifts the colour from flat navy into something with genuine movement in it, and the black PVD trim keeps the whole thing from tipping into ostentation.

What makes the Icon worth its price is less the finish than the feel: an ample barrel that fills the hand, weight balanced for comfort across a long writing session, and a vintage-style wraparound clip lifted straight from Sheaffer's own archive. It is a pen designed to be written with rather than admired.
